![]() In the case of using conda for creating and managing our virtual environments, these are fully independent, which means they don't relate with the System Python or to each other. We will go deeper into what this diagram means, but for now, you should have basic understanding about what is a virtual environment. ![]() In the next sections of this post, I will explain that a virtual environment is not limited to Python, but any arbitrary software.įor example, in the diagram above we have:Ī conda installation with 4 virtual environments, 2 Python, 1 R, 1 Java. Some libraries may have conflicting requirements (for example, a library needs Python 3.6 while other legacy unmaintained library still needs Python 2.7) and can be installed in different virtual environments.Ī virtual environment is just an isolated installation of Python and its libraries. For example, one virtual environment for every project, or a virtual environment for every application you want to run isolated from the rest of your system (Jupyter, Apache Airflow, etc.). You can create as many virtual environments as you need. Install and uninstall libraries, and if something breaks, you can just delete the environment and create it again without risk. You can experiment with them without fear. Typical usages for virtual environments are: In that case, virtual environments are also your best friend. Now imagine that you want to install the latest version of Apache Airflow (a Python library for orchestrating workflows) using Python version 3.8, but your system runs Python 3.7. If during the process of installing libraries (like pandas or scikit-learn) System Python breaks (and believe me, shit happens), the probabilities of being in trouble (complicated fix / fresh OS install) are high, that's one of the reasons virtual environments exist and are so popular. That's the reason we want to preserve this Python installation clean and working perfectly. For example, if you open a file explorer, it may use System Python under the hood to list files and folders. This Python installation is called System Python, and it means that this executable is used by our Operating System to do many things. Python is just an executable binary in our system. ![]() If you get a better understanding of virtual environments we have accomplished our goal.Īs you can see, the output of this command says that Python is already installed in our system, specifically in the location /usr/bin/python3. The goal of this post is to end this madness once for all. ![]() You would be surprised how many excellent professionals, even with 5+ years of experience still struggle with chaotic, corrupted, and barely usable Python installations because of that. We also tried other alternatives and always go back to conda because it is the only, let's say, full featured solution on the market.īased on my experience of more than 6 years doing Data Science, conda (and virtual environments in general) is a tool that is often not well understood. We use it for both development and production purposes and we strongly believe that conda stands out from other alternatives like virtualenv, poetry, pyenv or pipenv. This post is about conda, the tool we use to install and manage Python and its libraries in our systems. ![]() This is the first post of the WhiteBox toolkit series, where we will tell you more about the tools we use in our everyday job, in high detail. There are two types of Data Scientists, those who took the time to master conda and those who don't (and cry at the corners because of that). ![]()

It can also either return to the place where it launch or it fly to where the remote control currently is handy if you were launching from a boat.GoPro attempted to establish a presence in the camera drone market with the GoPro Karma drone. It does have some cool automatic moves though, like a "dronie" (that's a swooping drone selfie), a orbit mode (it'll spin 360 degrees around you or an object while pointing the camera inward), a reveal shot (it pops up over a canyon wall while the camera tilts up), and a cable cam mode (it'll follow a two-point track that you set). While it would seem like slower flight would make it better for newbies, it doesn't have obstacle-avoidance tech on board and currently can't track a subject that's moving-both excellent automation features that make flying and filming easier. Other ways the Karma lags behind the Mavic Pro: You only get a pathetic 18 minutes of flight time compared to 27 with the Mavic Karma's range is just under two miles, half of what the Mavic gets and the Karma is slower (35mph versus 40mph) and less responsiveness due to its bulk. The interface is minimal, which helps usability but doesn't offer the granular controls that appeal to advanced users. ![]() ![]() I hate fumbling with my phone or a tablet just to see where I'm going, so this makes setup on the Karma a lot easier. The Karma Remote is bulkier than the Mavic's, but it has a built-in 5-inch touchscreen that is bright enough to be readable in sunlight. This is the biggest difference between Karma and the other drones: You're not just getting a flying camera, you're getting a versatile adventure filmmaking system. (To be fair, I did struggle to find a good place to attach it). You can capture ultra-smooth handheld shots, or you can attach the Grip to your body with a standard GoPro mount, and your mountain biking footage will be eerily bumpless. You simply attach it to the battery-powered Karma Grip (included) and you've essentially got a really excellent Steadicam system. Not only can you then detach the waterproof GoPro Hero camera and stick it on your surfboard, helmet, bike, dog, whatever, but you can detach the Karma's 3-axis camera stabilizer too. The real kicker here is that the Karma isn't just a drone. The biggest difference between Karma and the other drones: You're not just getting a flying camera, you're getting a versatile adventure filmmaking system. You could throw it in a tiny backpack and forget it's even there. It has far better battery life and potential range. It's just so much lighter and more portable, it has obstacle avoidance and better smart modes (including tracking). Because of that, I am now recommending the DJI Mavic Pro. That said, the biggest reason that the Mavic Pro lost is because we thought the camera was trash, and further testing has revealed that it certainly isn't that. It has a wider dynamic range, colors are better, and it automatically adjusts to changing conditions nicely. Ultimately, I still prefer the Hero5 Camera on the GoPro Karma. Considering tapping to focus is absolutely mandatory to get a good shot, you'd think that would be the first thing DJI would tell you absolutely must do. Nor was there any pop-up explainer on the remote control. The word "focus" does not appear at all in the Quick Start guide, and the only mention of it is in passing on page 42 of the full User Manual, and even then it isn't explained. Also, you shouldn't have to tap to focus in order to get usable footage.ĭJI didn't tell us about the feature. Sometimes you want everything to be nicely focused, and that wasn't something I was able to achieve with the Mavic. Focus on the foreground and the horizon will be blurry. If you focus on the horizon then objects close up look like tiny toys (almost like a tilt-shift effect). ![]() That said, the camera has a very shallow depth of field which makes it impossible to get everything in focus. Also, it's good that you can achieve some cool, cinematic shots by playing with the focus. This means that the camera isn't absolute garbage, like I initially thought it was. When you do the thing you tapped will generally come into nice, sharp focus. With the Mavic Pro you have to adjust the focus by manually tapping on a point on your phone or tablet's screen. All of DJI's previous drones will simply auto adjust focus as you fly. Unlike any previous DJI drone, the Mavic Pro has a new tap-to-focus feature. In short, we are changing our pick to recommend the DJI Mavic Pro. We were far from the only reviewers to do so, but still, wrong is wrong.
